Digitally Improving Social and Emotional Skills of Primary School Teachers( Digisel )

Covid-19 pandemic has stuck the regular education and training since December 2019 all over the World. To UNESCO, at the end of April 2020, educational institutions were shut down in 186 countries, affecting approximately 74 of total enrolled learners on the planet (https://en.unesco.org/covid19/educationresponse). The temporary lockdowns have changed the course of education from regular to a virtual one, resulting in the acceleration of the digital transformation which is a requirement of the 21st century, but it has been discovered during this crisis that teachers are not well-prepared to adapt themselves to the digital teaching approach. Actually, and before the Covid-19 crisis, teachers reported a strong need for training in the use of ICT for teaching, with 18 on average across OECD countries identifying this as a high training need (OECD, 2019). The results of a School Education Gateway survey attracted 4859 respondents from more than 40 countries (of whom 86 were teachers or school heads), show that, following COVID-19, the majority of teachers (66.9) had to teach online for the first time (https://www.schooleducationgateway.eu/en/pub/viewpoints/surveys/survey-on-online-teaching.htm ). The Foundation for Aid Against Drug Addiction (Fad) has elaborated a survey for knowing the impact on their concerns, needs and proposals of 5,000 teachers, families and students. It is very relevant that the majority opinion of the teaching staff participating in the research is that the fundamental concern is the motivation for learning (76.1), at a considerable distance from the management of emotions (61.8) and the self-management of the learning process (60.9). The system of online teaching should be accompanied by the needed personal development skills for managing the best way: interpersonal communication processes, empathy, creative thinking, etc. To the survey made in Poland, in April 2020 (report Remote education during COVID-19 pandemic, Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation), the majority of teachers (85) had no experience in distant learning before COVID. Another survey has been conducted to explore the needs of the primary school teachers in Kutahya by DPU. The results showed that 151 answers out of 394 were meaningful. The asked teachers confirmed that they are in need of getting advanced training on the technical, social and emotional development of skills along with digital teaching techniques. Teachers with high literacy of social and emotional skills and equipped with digital components are more likely to be able to raise the students both socially, emotionally and digitally. Those findings require a transformation in learning & teaching processes in online classes. As the development of soft and digital skills interrelate with social and emotional learning, its pretty crucial to upskill sets of cognitive, affective, and behavioral competencies as well as digital ones so that they can adapt to the rapid transformations which are essential in the 21st century. Thus the aim of the Project is to support primary school teachers, who are the main target group, both digitally, socially, and emotionally in response to the Covid-19 outbreak via developing modules such as “teaching new generation students in primary schools”, “managing the online class effectively” and “defining inter-personal communication processes”, “developing social and emotional behaviors” and “empathy among students in online classes”, “developing creative thinking and problem-solving skills during online courses”, using online methods, techniques and tools in primary education and developing innovatively digital versions of the courses. Each module will be enriched by digital pathway for the creation and usage of the module, content, and activities in theory and video-based, a toolbox including helpful tips/strategies and tools and the section for the assessment tools. Also, an ELearning Platform for the digitized versions of the modules along with releasing academic papers will be developed. As the integration of soft skills is very essential to build not only for schools but also in life -from the early learning experiences in school and beyond, and the needs are globally proved, it is a need to conduct such kind of Project transnationally. Also, the project partners will share their mature experiences, and it will pave the way for having a look at the whole scenario on soft skills from diversified aspects. The project will make use of the individuals experts capacity to increase the project outputs. Therefore, the trans-nationalization of the Project will be provided by integration cooperation and will be built on a solid base.
